STORNOWAY’S TOWN HALL

The municipality of Stornoway had many names over the years: Depot, Winslow-South, Winslow, Bruceville, Saint-Alphonse of Winslow and Stornoway. All served at one time or another, to designate the municipality of Stornoway. As to the name Stornoway, it would appear that it was used as early as 1849 to designate the crossroad of the roads (today routes 108 and 161). Stornoway (Steôrnabhagh, in Scottish Gaelic), is the main town for Scotland’s Outer Hebrides Islands’ administrative center. A good part of the first settlers came from these islands (especially Lewis Island). It is on August 21st, 1973 that the municipality of Winslow-South changed to Stornoway.
